Announcing the Second International Neuro-Linguistic Programming Research Conference at Cardiff University, UK.

Well, what a hugely successful joint national conference we had with the NZAPH! Two great days with no less than nine fantastic (or perhaps “Phenomenal” to use Heidi’s words!) presentations all packed with new ideas for all, I’ll waste no more time...
After opening introductions from both NZANLP & NZAPH Presidents, our first presenter was international keynote speaker Heidi Heron. Heidi’s engaging and humorous manner was a pleasure to watch and an inspiration to us all. Heidi’s presentation “Living Your Best With NLP” focused on the practical aspects of applying NLP to our own lives in order to make changes for ourselves and not just to ‘do NLP to others’. She pointed out how this actually makes our work with others even more powerful. Heidi shared how she and her friend set personal and professional goals yearly and regularly meet to check in with where they are in regards to them and give themselves those well deserved ‘pats on the back’ when needed! Heidi recommends respecting your own time, space and energy and to respect and cherish the wins when working with clients. Heidi shared so many personal anecdotes and models it would be impossible to cover them here but some of her parting words were poignant “be proud of yourself, your clients (and share that with them) and to laugh lots and enjoy what you do”
And a special offer from Heidi!!! Trance Camp with Steve Gilligan is coming up in Australia in April next year. Heidi is offering the NZ participants from both NZANLP & NZAPH a $300 discount to help offset travel and expenses. What a fantastic opportunity to train with a personal student of Milton Erickson! The website is www.trancecamp.com.au - people can use the online code NZANLP to get the discount. Oh another thing, the ABNLP holds monthly workshops in Sydney and Melbourne for members. We are in the process of figuring out how to video these and have them available online. I'll let you know when that happens too.
After morning tea, Aaron McLoughlin – president of NZAPH – gave a fascinating presentation of his own work “Reclaim Sleep – Empower Your Client to Sleep”. Aaron has turned this groundbreaking work into a book and CD set that contains all of the information needed to work with sleep problems. Despite this presentation being packed with detailed information and statistics Aaron’s usual high energy and light hearted manner enabled everyone in the room to understand the ideas and concepts involved. He shared the 11 aspects of the client’s life to address and explained each in an easy to understand yet very thorough manner using analogies from his own life. From Aaron’s research he shared how there always seems to be a root cause for problems and how to address these issues in a way that creates a new and more beneficial emotional seed in the client’s mind. He demonstrated examples of each hypnotic aspect of his presentation on the whole room, keeping us all well and truly ‘entranced’! For more info, email Aaron on aaron@vervecreative.co.nz
After lunch Rick Harris briefly presented his business ‘Health TV’; a purely health and well-being TV station that is being broadcast in hundreds of doctors waiting rooms around the country and showed how practitioners advertising on this medium have both a captured audience and targeted demographic all in one.
After Rick, Jan Newton presented “What Are We Teaching?” Jan has been using NLP in schools for a great many years. This was a presentation that really got everyone involved – a technique that Jan obviously uses in schools. We had objects being passed around the room to play with, and he even got everyone to get up and change seats... quite literally giving everyone a ‘new perspective’! Jan explained how teachers have as little as 40 seconds to connect and engage students at the start of a class and gave valuable tips and techniques for doing so such as using special anchors and props that create expectancy in students. He also explained the value of having a well formed and positive outcome in mind for teachers and shared some very useful presuppositions for keeping in mind. Jan’s unorthodox approach has proven so successful that he has transformed the lowest performing classes into the highest achieving ones.
The final presentation for Saturday was “Playing With Paradoxes” from Karyn Davis and Theresa Grainger. The start of their presentation was indeed a ‘play’! Karyn and Theresa demonstrated theatrically how living to any extreme (either “good” or “bad”) is not beneficial to a healthy and full life. Through humour and theatre we graphically saw how bringing polar opposites together by accepting the positive intention of each allows us to have more flexibility in life. The Polarity Balancer was the pattern that Karyn and Theresa shared and the whole audience got involved in trying it out. Being able to take a purposeful peek into opposite aspects of ourselves in certain situations from the perspectives of each extreme, balance, and an observer position was a valuable experience and I heard some very enlightened murmurs from around the room after the exercise was finished.
Bright and early on Sunday morning the day started with Anna McNaughton and her presentation “Working Towards The Future – Creating Toolboxes That Work”. Anna is very personable and has over 20 years of experience of helping and training others to share. Anna’s presentation focussed on how to promote ourselves as Practitioners and how to deal with conducting trainings in the corporate environment. She shared some extremely useful information around sales and conducting “short bites” in order to garner interest from possible clients. Anna shared the importance of creating relationships, partnerships and affiliates. A lot of practitioners make the mistake of cutting costs, especially in the perceived “recession” but Anna shrewdly pointed out that it’s not about cutting costs but adding value instead. With tips and insights humorously depicted in cartoons we all learnt a great deal about the ‘business’ side of NLP and hypnotherapy. One of Anna’s sayings that sticks in my mind around innovatively promoting oneself was “Never be afraid to try something new, remember amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic!”
Patricia Greenhough is a wonderful practitioner and trainer who gave us a great insight into “Healing the Younger Self & the Family System” based on techniques from John Overdurf and HNLP. Sharing her life journey and vast experience it became obvious how Patricia has integrated her many different skills as a practitioner into not just her practice but her life also. After sharing some of her client successes and then explaining the theory, Patricia then exquisitely demonstrated a really powerful technique aimed at bringing recognition of intelligence, being loved, attractiveness and other client centred resources to the younger self and past family system. Patricia’s warm and engaging manner coupled with her wonderful smile captivated the room as she gently guided her volunteer through this transformative process. Not just changing the younger self but the internally represented family and significant others also has the effect of healing ones entire life system in order to create lasting positive change.
Scheduled next was Mike Reeves-McMillan. Unfortunately Mike had some confusion over dates and he asked us to pass on this apology: “I'm very embarrassed and want to extend my deepest apologies to everyone for messing up my dates and missing the conference. I know a number of people were signed up for my talk – I will apologize to them also in the next NTrance and include the text of the talk. If there were any NLP people signed up for it, please pass this apology on and let them know that they can contact me for the text if they want. Somehow I had written the wrong weekend (next weekend) on my wall planner, and never checked it and corrected it. I'm usually a bit absent-minded but not as absent-minded as that - and this time I was also absent-bodied, unfortunately. My apologies again to all concerned”. Mike Reeves-McMillan
Meredith McCarthy gave a powerful presentation on Smoking Cessation. She educated us about the effects of smoking, from the physical, mental and habitual point of view, giving a deep understanding about the smoker so that we could empathise and sincerely relate to any future clients who may wish to quit smoking. Meredith also gave us tools and methodologies to equip us to confidently deliver an effective smoking cessation program. She explained how her program works so successfully even with those smokers who don’t want to quit but have been told they have to! Meredith’s humour and obvious passion and concern about this topic combined with her ability to strike up such good rapport with the audience lead to a very satisfying and enjoyable presentation where we felt enabled to deliver a valuable smoking cessation program!
To end the conference (and presenting at the same time as Meredith) we had Lena Gray from Ignition ltd. Lena’s presentation “Into the Future with Meta Coaching – an Introduction” gave us a sneak-peek at one of the latest and most successful coaching methodologies available today. Lena’s high energy presentation explained how the foundations of Meta Coaching lie in Neuro Semantics, the model described by Wyatt Woodsmall as “the greatest contribution to NLP”. Lena explained the concepts behind and how the field of coaching differs from that of therapy, training, consulting and mentoring. Lena explained how in Meta Coaching the client is the expert and how the coach uses a specific model of questioning to help them unleash their greatest potentials. With great visuals, music and plenty of “Woo-Hoo’s”; what a great way to finish the conference.
A last meeting of the whole group and closing words from both NZANLP and NZAPH presidents brought a fantastic weekend to its official close. With some last minute networking and farewells all round everyone headed towards home to allow their minds to reflect on the new learnings and absorb some great new skills. To all of the attendees and our fantastic presenters, the committee extends it most heartfelt thanks.
A taste of the feedback we’ve received so far;
